Dental Team Fixes Clinic as Well as Teeth

November 1, 2000

Dental Team

September 25-October 6, 2000

Yap, F.S.M.

This was the first dental team Canvasback has sent to Yap. The team consisted of dentists Tom Wieg and Ric Hufnagel; dental hygienist Kathy Keightley; dental assistants Erica Hufnagel, Shelley Hufnagel, Timothy Wieg, Andrew Wieg and Tracy Wright, and team coordinator Callie Wieg.

The team provided a wide range of basic dental services to all age groups. They saw 268 people for examinations and assessments, and provided $111,495 worth of services (based on the accepted California Dental Service Fee schedule).

When the team arrived in Yap, they found that several of the basic mechanical systems in the clinic were nonfunctional. The central vacuum system had never been installed properly and all the air lines were operating at below normal air pressure, making standard dentistry very difficult.

Fortunately, in addition to his dentistry skills, Dr. Ric Hufnagel, of Cloverdale, Calif., is also highly skilled at repairing dental equipment. The first three days were spent providing basic emergency services to relieve pain while working with hospital maintenance staff to install a new central vacuum system, which was provided by Canvasback Missions. All dental units were examined and repaired so that all treatment rooms and operating units were completely functional.

In the end, team leaders reported that they see great promise of Yap as a model clinic for the FSM. The excellent staff and facilities make it a potentially perfect place to provide the most up-to-date service and a educational center for all of the FSM.

"It was a privilege and honor to help the people of Yap," says Dr. Wieg. "The friendship they returned to us far outweighs the time we gave to them and our appreciation will last forever."

"One thing that really stands out in my mind was what we did for a 17-year-old girl name Julie. She would have lost all her teeth but we did six root canals and lots of other restorations on her.

We saved all her front teeth. It took us a long time to do all that work on her because it was so bad!!! Near the end, she was crying. She wasn’t in pain. She was just tired. Shelley and I took turns wiping away her tears. I don’t think I will ever forget that."

Tracy Wright

Dental Assistant

"Today the boys and I worked very well together and produced a lot of dentistry. Ric [Dr. Hufnagel] spent some time trying to improve the suction switches. The Yap dental nurses couldn’t believe that there could be suction in their clinic. Ric worked very hard to get it going. I applaud him for it.

The people are very nice and appreciative of all we are doing for them. We go to the school tomorrow morning to do some screening of the kids there. Mainly to catch molar sealants and decay before they are lost."

Tom Wieg, DDS
Mariposa, Calif.

"I would like to express sincere thanks and gratitude to Canvasback for making it possible for the Dental Team to visit Yap. The people of Yap have benefited greatly from the visit.

"There has not been any dental team visit to Yap for a long time; therefore, dental services have become a very much-needed service. The services rendered were of first class. It was unfortunate that the team could not stay longer. Many people were still coming making appointments to see the team.

"Again, thanks to Canvasback and the Dental Team for providing the very much-needed services to the people of Yap State."
