Work ‘em hard and put ‘em away wet

June 2009

My father taught me that is a poor way to treat even a horse so we won’t put our young people on Canvasback Extreme Youth mission trip away wet but we will work them hard. Under the straight overhead equatorial sun on the island of Pohnpei, the youth will perform much needed repairs at the SDA school and church and when the burning sun goes down they will present evangelistic programs for the children. Each youth will also get a rare opportunity to work in the dental and eye clinics. To see what the youth will be doing, click here.

They are a part of an ambitious four-team effort which includes ophthalmology, dentistry, building, and evangelism.  The dental team will set up Canvasback’s portable dental units in the villages and train the Pohnpei staff in crown and bridge procedures. The ophthalmologists will give sight to blind people whose cataracts are as hard and opaque as white rock. We expect that this eye team will perform at least as well as previous Canvasback teams that have examined approximately 500 patients, restored sight for 70 to 100 people and dispensed 400 eyeglasses. Usually, only one eye is restored but with one eye, you can see! It’s dramatic to see blind people who are timidly led into surgery walking away with confidence – unassisted!

On many of the islands in Micronesia, the island children’s dental needs are overwhelming. Canvasback dentists will be going out to the villages to provide dental care and they will be training the local providers new skills and procedures.

The youth building team will be working preparing the Seventh-day Adventist School for  classes this fall and renovating the parsonage.  In the evening, led by former student missionary Pastor Branden Stoltz, they will conduct an evangelistic meeting called Jesus Loves Zories

The young missionaries have already raised a significant portion of their cost for this trip and Canvasback’s contribution is $900 for each youth. The total Canvasback has to raise is $9,000 and $3,000 has already been raised. To give a good kid a life changing mission experience, you can contribute by clicking here
